Coral Triangle Initiative

The MPA Working Group visited the Tun Mustapha Park, a recognized globally significant marine conservation area in Sabah, Malaysia. The park is 898, 762 hectares in size, and located off the districts of Kudat, Kota Marudu and Pitas right up to the Balabac Strait.

The visit was part of the 8th MPA Regional Exchange to share best practices in effectively managing marine protected areas.

Ending the workshop on Institutional Changes for an Effective CTI-CFF and writeshop for the renewal of the CTI-CFF Regional Plan of Action (RPOA 2.0) in high spirits and with full optimism from CT6 member countries, development partners and CTI-CFF Regional Secretariat. The group provided inputs to improve the structure and processes of CTI-CFF as a delivery mechanism that can add value and progress on national agenda priorities effectively as it move forward to RPOA 2.0.

Raising climate action for coastal and marine ecosystems conservation and adaptation in Coral Triangle Region, representatives from the CT6 countries and CTI-CFF development partners gathered for a 3-day workshop focusing on communication, education and public awareness and blue carbon.

Dr. Sharifah Nora Ibrahim, Deputy Executive Director for Program Services talked about the CTI with focus on the legal and institutional aspects of marine conservation, in line with SDG 5 and 14 during the Women in Maritime Asia Regional Conference being held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from 9-11 April 2019. The conference is supported by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

Coral Triangle Initiative

During the MPA Regional Exchange, members of the MPA TWG discussed among others the status of MPA M&E indicators, CTI-CFF Regional MPA database and initial criteria for Sustainable Marine Tourism and Branding. The members of the TWG also joined a study tour to Raja Ampat, a MPA Learning Site on Sustainable Marine Tourism.
